How Do I drain the fuel tank on a Fiat Punto?
My girlfriends tank may need draining, as she may have put diesel in the damn car. Anyway, how do I go about draining the fuel tank?
All I know is that its a year 2000 model.
Look under the rear seat...the fuel pump is there iirc.
Be careful removing it because if you break the hose clips it's new pump time.
Once the pump is out you can get a majority of the fuel out with a jam jar or a siphon. The rest would have to be removed via the plug or the engine.
Bearing in mind that the fuel pipes and injector rail would also need emptying I'd say the easiest way would be to refit the fuel upm and run it off a 12V source like a car battery to get it to pump the fuel to the engine...then disconnect a fuel hose and let the pump do the work.
However this sn't exactly safe as fuel hoses can be under VERY high pressure and you REALLY don't want fuel penetrating your blood stream.
After the tank is drained it'll need cleaning to ensure there are no traces of diesel left....as will the pipes, injector rail and probably injectors.
The more expensive but ultimately easier option is to pay a garage to do all this for you as it's a pig of a job and if they cock it up then they'll have to repair it.
