What kind of grain to feed my horse?
Hi all. I need some help with choosing a feed for my new horse: ) She is a 4 year old, Mustang. About 14'3 hands and 900 pounds. She is in great shape, and I am looking to maintain her right where she's at. She is currently eating a "special blend" my farm owner has mixed for her at her feed store, but I cannot buy grain 1000 lbs at a time, (obviously) so I am planning to buy 50 lb bags of the premixed stuff. Tractor supply is close to my apartment, so thats where I will probably go. After talking to my barn owner, we need a 12% feed, and she said I don't want one with too much corn because it will make my mare "hot". Does anyone have a brand they like. Also, I am on a budget. I need to see if it is in fact cheaper to provide my own grain or use the grain at the barn. $200 per month, versus $250. My mare is used as a pleasure horse, and not in foal, nor do I plan to breed her in the future. She eats 2lb of grain, 2 times daily. Thanks for your help. I'm very excited!
If your horse is on 24/7 turnout and free choice hay, don't grain. No need to.
Corn doesn't make a horse "HOT" like your barn owner stated. It's used to give them 'heat' in the winter.
OATS will make a horse a little "spicy" in the pants though.

All Stock Sweet: $ 8.99
Producers Pride 10% sweet: $ 9.99
Dumor pleasure sweet 12%: $12.99
Platform Pleasure (not a sweet feed): $16.59
If you have a Southern States near you they carry good grain.
If I was on a budget and had to choose from TSC...I'd do the Dumor.
IF I could swing it then I'd do the Platform Pleasure (no sweet!) I prefer not to have a sweet feed.
